    Photoacoustic Tomography in a Rectangular Reflecting Cavity

    Almost all known image reconstruction algorithms for photoacoustic and thermoacoustic tomography assume that the acoustic waves leave the region of interest after a finite time. This assumption is reasonable if the reflections from the detectors and surrounding surfaces can be neglected or filtered out (for example, by time-gating). However, when the object is surrounded by acoustically hard detector arrays, and/or by additional acoustic mirrors, the acoustic waves will undergo multiple reflections. (In the absence of absorption they would bounce around in such a reverberant cavity forever). This disallows the use of the existing free-space reconstruction techniques. This paper proposes a fast iterative reconstruction algorithm for measurements made at the walls of a rectangular reverberant cavity. We prove the convergence of the iterations under a certain sufficient condition, and demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithm in numerical simulations.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure

    An investigation of the basement complex aquifer system in Lofa county, Liberia, for the purpose of siting boreholes

    Liberia is recovering from a 14 year civil war and only 51% of the rural population has access to safe drinking water. Little hydrogeological knowledge survives in Liberia, increasing the difficulty in successfully siting new boreholes. An understanding of the local hydrogeological environment is therefore needed to improve borehole site selection and increase success rates. This research provides a semi-quantitative characterization of the hydrogeological environment of the basement aquifer in Lofa county, Liberia. Based on literature review and analysis of borehole logs, the study has developed a conceptual hydrogeological model for the local conditions, which is further characterized using 2D geoelectrical sections. Groundwater is predominantly obtained from the saprolite and underlying fractured bedrock, but specific capacities (median 281 l h-1 m-1; 25th and 75th percentile of 179 and 490 l h-1 m-1, respectively) are constrained by the limited thickness of the saturated saprolite. This study has shown that the groundwater resources in the crystalline basement in this part of Liberia conform to the general conceptual model, allowing standard techniques used elsewhere for siting and developing groundwater to be used

    A possible contribution to CMB anisotropies at high l from primordial voids

    We present preliminary results of an analysis into the effects of primordial voids on the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We show that an inflationary bubble model of void formation predicts excess power in the CMB angular power spectrum that peaks between 2000 < l < 3000. Therefore, voids that exist on or close to the last scattering surface at the epoch of decoupling can contribute significantly to the apparent rise in power on these scales recently detected by the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI).Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures.     We show that the inclusion of backreaction of massive long wavelengths imposes dynamical constraints on the allowed phase space of initial conditions for inflation, which results in a superselection rule for the initial conditions. Only high energy inflation is stable against collapse due to the gravitational instability of massive perturbations. We present arguments to the effect that the initial conditions problem {\it cannot} be meaningfully addressed by thermostatistics as far as the gravitational degrees of freedom are concerned. Rather, the choice of the initial conditions for the universe in the phase space and the emergence of an arrow of time have to be treated as a dynamic selection.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figs.     This is the story of the settlement of Kansas Territory and one of its outstanding leaders, James Montgomery. With the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, the territory called Kansas was created and hurled, by the doctrine of popular sovereignty, into the turbulent issue of slavery. The pro-slavery forces dominated Congress and the Kansas Missouri border, and the people of the South felt that Kansas was already theirs. The pro-slavery settlers, not sure of their own strength, felt that they must use fraud at the polls and intimidation of the free-state settlers in their homes. This practice was carried out with success in Linn and Bourbon counties in the Legislative election of March I, 1855, with illegal voters being brought over from Missouri. This coup d\u27etat drew a distinct line between the free-state and pro-slavery people in Kansas Territory. The cause of freedom rarely lacks a leader, and to the aid of these free-state men came their friend and neighbor James Montgomery with a heritage of bravery and a good education. Montgomery organized his friends among the freestate people for defense and, at times, retaliation and restitution. These, and other more unsavory bands of men, were called jayhawkers, for they had to arm and feed themselves by foraging upon the enemy when in action and replenish their arms, ammunition, and horses from the enemy\u27s stores

    False-vacuum decay in generalized extended inflation

    False-vacuum decay was studied in context of generalized extended inflationary theories, and the bubble nucleation rates was computed for these theories in the limit of G(sub N) yields 0. It was found that the time dependence of the nucleation rate can be exponentially strong through the time dependence of the Jordan-Brans-Dicke field. This can have a pronounced effect on whether extended inflation can be successfully implemented

    An analysis of the transit times of CoRoT-1b

    I report the results from a study of the transit times for CoRoT-1b, which was one of the first planets discovered by CoRoT. Analysis of the pipeline reduced CoRoT light curve yields a new determination of the physical and orbital parameters of planet and star, along with 35 individual transit times at a typical precision of 36 s. I estimate a planet-to-star radii ratio of 0.1433 +/- 0.0010, a ratio of the planet's orbital semimajor axis to the host star radius of 4.751 +/- 0.045, and an orbital inclination for the planet of 83.88 +/- 0.29 deg. The observed transit times are consistent with CoRoT-1b having a constant period and there is no evidence of an additional planet in the system. I use the observed constancy of the transit times to set limits on the mass of a hypothetical additional planet in a nearby, stable orbit. I ascertain that the most stringent limits (4 M_earth at 3 sigma confidence) can be placed on planets residing in a 1:2 mean motion resonance with the transiting planet. In contrast, the data yield less stringent limits on planets near a 1:3 mean motion resonance (5 M_jup at 3 sigma confidence) than in the surrounding parameter space. In addition, I use a simulation to investigate what sensitivity to additional planets could be obtained from the analysis of data measured for a similar system during a CoRoT long run (100 sequential transit times). I find that for such a scenario, planets with masses greater than twice that of Mars (0.2 M_earth) in the 1:2 mean motion resonance would cause high-significance transit time deviations. Therefore, such planets could be detected or ruled out using CoRoT long run data.     Extended inflation from higher dimensional theories

    The possibility is considered that higher dimensional theories may, upon reduction to four dimensions, allow extended inflation to occur. Two separate models are analayzed. One is a very simple toy model consisting of higher dimensional gravity coupled to a scalar field whose potential allows for a first-order phase transition. The other is a more sophisticated model incorporating the effects of non-trivial field configurations (monopole, Casimir, and fermion bilinear condensate effects) that yield a non-trivial potential for the radius of the internal space. It was found that extended inflation does not occur in these models. It was also found that the bubble nucleation rate in these theories is time dependent unlike the case in the original version of extended inflation
